Mount Kouroupa
The mountainous area of the White Mountains extends to the east of Sfakia, south of the prefecture of Rethymnon, creating a small mountain range parallel to the coastal zone of the prefecture, including the main peaks of Kryoneritis and Kouroupa.

Frangokastello Beach
Each May, dark, fleeting figures descend upon a stretch of sand leading up to this 14th-century Venetian fort. In the early morning, when the sun still hangs low over a calm, glassy sea, these ghosts of slain Greek soldiers advance toward the ruins. Dressed in black, they trek onward by foot and horseback, their weapons glowing beneath an awakening sky.

Preveli beach
Preveli beach and lagoon (Greek Λίμνη του Πρέβελη), sometimes known locally as "Palm Beach", is located below the monastery, at the mouth of the Kourtaliótiko gorge.
